💡 British English Pronunciation Tips
🎤 Non-Rhotic R
British English doesn't pronounce final "r" sounds.
🗣️ Vowel Differences
Key differences in "a", "o", "u" vowels vs American.
📝 Daily Practice
Practice with British speakers to internalize accent.
What defines a standard British accent
The reference accent usually described as Received Pronunciation, or more commonly now Standard Southern British English, is spoken natively by a small minority of British people. It is nonetheless the variety most dictionaries and courses transcribe, so it is worth knowing what distinguishes it.
Non-rhoticity: the defining feature
An r at the end of a syllable is not pronounced. Car is /kɑː/, bird is
/bɜːd/, teacher is /ˈtiːtʃə/. This is the single largest difference from American
English.
Crucially, the r returns when the next word begins with a vowel. My car has no /r/,
but my car is red does. Learners who delete it everywhere produce a pattern no native speaker uses and also
break the linking that connects words in fluent speech.
Vowels that differ from American English
| Set | British | American | Words |
|---|---|---|---|
| BATH | /ɑː/ | /æ/ | bath, laugh, grass, dance, can't, after |
| LOT | /ɒ/ rounded | /ɑ/ unrounded | hot, dog, box, shop |
| GOAT | /əʊ/ | /oʊ/ | go, home, boat |
| NURSE | /ɜː/ no r | /ɝ/ with r | bird, work, learn |
The BATH set is not a general British feature. Northern English speakers use /æ/ in all of these
words, exactly as Americans do — it is specifically a southern feature that became associated with the
standard accent.
Consonants
- T stays a T. British English keeps a clear
/t/in water, better and city, where American English uses a quick flap. - Glottal stops are increasingly common in informal speech: bottle as bo'le, water as wa'er. This is a genuine feature of contemporary British English rather than an error.
- Yod retention. British English keeps a
/j/after certain consonants: tune is/tjuːn/or/tʃuːn/, and news is/njuːz/, where American English has/tuːn/and/nuːz/.
Word stress differences
A number of common words are stressed differently: a-DDRESS for the noun, GARR-idge for garage, ad-VER-tis-ment, la-BOR-a-try, BA-llet and A-dult. British English also reduces -ary, -ery and -ory endings, so necessary has three syllables in British English and four in American.
Choosing a target
Neither variety is more correct and both are intelligible worldwide. What matters most is consistency: mixing an American r with a British BATH vowel is more noticeable to listeners than either accent used consistently, because they cannot form a stable expectation of how you speak.
