1. Who We Are and How to Reach Us

For the purposes of the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation, the data controller is:

Privacy questions, access requests and deletion requests all go to that address and are answered within 30 days.

2. Information We Collect

We collect only what is needed to run the site, and the great majority of visitors never give us any personal information at all.

• Information you volunteer. Your email address and message if you write to us. Nothing on this site requires an account.
• Usage data. Pages viewed, time on page, approximate location at city level, referring site, device type and browser, collected through Google Analytics — and only if you have accepted analytics cookies.
• Technical data. IP address and standard server log data, processed by our hosting provider for security and abuse prevention.
• Advertising data. Identifiers used by Google and its partners to select and measure ads, as described in section 5, and only if you have accepted advertising cookies.
• Local browser storage. Your cookie choice, and settings such as your chosen accent, are stored in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device and are never transmitted to us.

We do not knowingly collect special-category data (health, beliefs, biometrics used for identification, and so on), and we ask you not to send it to us.

4. How We Use Information, and Our Legal Basis

Under the GDPR we must tell you the legal basis for each use:

• Operating and securing the website — legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)). Without server logs the site cannot be kept online or defended against abuse.
• Answering your messages — legitimate interests, or performance of a request you made (Article 6(1)(b)).
• Analytics — your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), given through the cookie banner and withdrawable at any time.
• Advertising and ad measurement — your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), given through the cookie banner and withdrawable at any time.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not use your data to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects.

5. Advertising and Google AdSense

This site carries advertising so that the tools and guides can stay free and account-free. Please read this section carefully.

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and to other websites.
• Google's use of advertising cookies — including the DoubleClick DART cookie — enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet.
• Third-party vendors and ad networks other than Google may also serve ads on this site and may set their own cookies. We do not control those cookies, and their use is governed by each vendor's own privacy policy.
• Where required, the information shared with advertising partners may include your IP address, device and browser characteristics, approximate location and the pages you view, for the purposes of ad selection, frequency capping, measurement and fraud prevention.

How to opt out of personalised advertising:

• Turn off personalised ads from Google at Google My Ad Center or Google Ads Settings.
• Opt out of many third-party vendors at aboutads.info/choices (United States), the NAI opt-out page, or youronlinechoices.eu (Europe).
• Reject advertising cookies on this site using the cookie banner, or reopen it at any time with the change your cookie settings link in the page footer.

6. Cookies and Similar Technologies

Cookies fall into three groups on this site:

• Strictly necessary. Needed for the site to load and to remember your cookie choice. These are always active and cannot be switched off. They do not track you.
• Analytics. Google Analytics 4 (_ga, _ga_*), used to count visitors and see which guides are read. IP addresses are anonymised. Set only after you accept.
• Advertising. Google AdSense and its partners (__gads, __gpi, IDE and similar), used to select and measure ads. Set only after you accept.

We implement Google Consent Mode v2. Until you choose, ad storage, ad personalisation, ad user data and analytics storage all default to denied, and Google tags run in a restricted, cookieless mode. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though blocking all cookies may break parts of the site.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent through Google's consent message, a consent management platform certified under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. Visitors elsewhere see our own cookie banner. In both cases the change your cookie settings link in the footer lets you review or withdraw your choice.

7. Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymisation enabled, purely to understand which pages are useful. We do not use it to build advertising profiles or to identify individuals. You can opt out across all websites with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or simply by rejecting analytics cookies here.

8. Affiliate Links

Some pages link to Preply, a tutoring marketplace. If you book a lesson after following one of those links, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. Those links are marked as sponsored in the page code and are disclosed in the text where they appear. Preply sets its own cookies once you land on its site, under its own privacy policy. A commission never changes what is recommended here; see our editorial policy for how that is kept separate.

9. Sharing and International Transfers

We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising outside the advertising described in section 5. Data is shared only with:

• Google (AdSense and Analytics), as processors or independent controllers depending on the service.
• Google Firebase Hosting, which serves the pages and keeps server logs.
• Authorities, where we are legally required to disclose, or where disclosure is necessary to protect our rights or the security of the site.

These providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Such transfers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

10. Data Retention

Email correspondence is kept for up to 24 months so that we can follow up on a question. Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months and then deleted automatically. Server logs are retained for a short period by our hosting provider for security purposes. Advertising data retention is set by Google, as described in its own policies.

11. Your Rights

If you are in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, you have the right to access your data, correct it, have it erased, restrict or object to its processing, receive it in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing already carried out. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.

If you are in California, the CCPA and CPRA give you the right to know what personal information is collected and for what purpose, to request deletion, to correct inaccurate information, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information for money. Because advertising cookies may count as "sharing" under the CPRA, rejecting advertising cookies in the banner functions as your Do Not Sell or Share request, and we honour Global Privacy Control signals. You will never be treated differently for exercising these rights.

If you are in Brazil, the LGPD gives you equivalent rights of confirmation, access, correction, anonymisation, portability, deletion and information about data sharing. Requests go to the email address in section 1.

12. Children's Privacy

This website is intended for adults and older teenagers learning English. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and it will be deleted promptly. Advertising on this site is not served on the basis of content directed at children.

13. Security

The site is served over HTTPS and hosted on Google Firebase Hosting. We apply reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, and we hold very little personal data in the first place, which is the strongest safeguard available. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

14. External Links

This website links to third-party sites, including dictionaries, research sources and Preply. We are not responsible for their content, privacy practices or security. Please review their policies before sharing personal data with them.
